X00303 Update on Who is Martha Williams

Now that I have a bit more information about the Williams family, I have taken another look at the question of Who is Martha Williams (X00303).

As mentioned previously, she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in the same plot as some of the other members of the Thomas Williams family and I was wondering if there was a connection.

Martha Williams was born Martha Frost and married Henry H. Williams. She was the daughter of John Frost and Mary Williams and since the surname Williams appears on both sides of the marriage, it's not entire clear as to which side the connection could come from.

I thought that Mary Williams could be a sister of Thomas Williams, as he did have a sister named Mary. But Mary Williams, the sister of Thomas Williams was born in 1791, likely in Gloucenstershire and the Mary Williams who married John Frost was born in 1815 in Wales according to my research.

Henry H. Williams is the son of Lewis Williams and Orrilla Healey. It would appear that Lewis Williams was also born in Wales in 1807.

So both Williams connections to Martha Frost WIlliams originated in Wales and the timing doesn't seem to match with the Thomas Williams family. So it would appear that if there is a connection between the two families, it goes further back than that.

X00300: Who is Ann Sipin - Solved!

So, a few years ago, I posted about X00300, the question of who is Ann Sipin who shows up in the 1861 census living with Thomas Williams and family. She appears to be a member of the family somehow, but the surname was not one that I have found anywhere else.

I was looking at the 1861 census record again and started wondering if the surname could perhaps have been Tipping, rather than Sipin. It would make sense as one of Thomas William's daughters married into the Tipping family.

I checked, and Elizabeth Ann Tipping, who would have been born in 1853 did not appear with the rest of the Tipping family in the 1861 census. So it would make sense that the "Ann Sipin' in the 1861 census with the WIlliams family is in fact Elizabeth Ann Tipping.

X00256 Thomas Williams date of death Solved!

I've posted previously about X00256 and Thomas Williams' date of death. In my last post, I mentioned that I was looking into a Thomas Williams who died 3 August 1885 and is buried in the St. James and St. Andrew Cemetery in Orillia.

Other than the cemetery stone itself, I haven't been able to find any information to confirm that it is, in fact, the correct Thomas Williams. I haven't been able to find aa civil registration death notice thus far.

I've check with newspapers for Barrie and Orillia to see if there was an obituary or news article, but didn't find anything there either.

So, I contacted the Anglican Church Archives to check the burial registers for St James Church. They weren't able to find a burial record. I also checked with the Presbyterian Church Archives in the oft chance that St. Andrews Church had a burial register. They didn't either.

So, the next step was to check with the cemetery itself. What they were able to confirm is that the date of death was 3 September 1885 and that the plot was registered to Hewett and Tipping, which pretty much indicates that this is the right Thomas Williams, because those would have likely been his nephews/neices, which also explains the words "uncle" on the stone!

X00281: More on what Happened to Edwin & Maude Williams after 1921

An update on X00281 and the question of what happened to Edwin and Maude Williams after 1921.

While researching other members of the Williams family, I came across the following obituary for his brother, Frederick Amos Williams from 1950:

In the obituary, it mentions that Fred A. Williams has a brother, Edwin L. Williams age 82 and living in Toronto. So we know that Edwin is still alive and living in Toronto in 1950.

X00305: John Douglas in Amherstburg

Just a quick update on X00305 where I've been trying to find out more about the Douglas and Williams brewers in Amherestburg, Ontario around 1850 and if they were connected to the Douglas and Williams brewers in Guelph from around the same time.

It's not much of a discovery, but going through past issues of the Amherstburg Echo and came across a number of ads like this one posted towards the end of 1849:

It's not much, but it does mean that there was a brewery for sale in the area in 1849. It's certainly not proof of anything, but it's a lead.

Profile: Helen Louise Burnet and Horace Arthur Burnet

Louisa Emily Hewett and Frank Burnet had six children together. Their last two children were twins born on 12 September 1898, a set of twins including their first daughter: Helen Louise Burnet and Horace Arthur Burnet [D06709].

Helen Louise Burnet
Helen Louise Burnet worked as a school teacher in Coldwater, Ontario [D05461] later retiring to Simcoe East [D04719]. She died 14 December 1982 [D04046, D07298].

Horace Arthur Burnet
Helen’s Twin brother, Horace was known as “Lad” to his friends [D07299]. He started work as a bookkeeper in Orillia [D04058] and married Mary Alice Dalton on 26 September 1925 [D04058]. He later became co-owner of the Roweburn Farm to the west of Orillia and of the Orillia Creamery Company [D06719, D07299]. Founded in 1921 by John Lewis Beaton, the Orillia Creamery ran a successful operation until it was bought out in 1958 by Acme Farmer’s Dairy and eventually becoming part of Dominion Dairies Limited [D07299, D07314].

Lad Burnet was also heavily involved in the Orillia community, serving three years on town council from 1933 to 1935, serving on the boards for several community organizations and assisting in volunteer relief work during the depression years of the 1930s [D07299]. Horace Arthur Burnet died in October of 1972 [D07299].

X00291 Update

In my search to find what happened to Hester Sophia Williams, I was looking into the possibility that she may have stayed in England rather than come to Canada with the family. I did come across a marriage record from 1853 in Cornwall, England between a Hester Ann Williams and a Henry Pascoe.

On the plus side, the year of birth is close (1831 vs 1833), and the name of the father is also Thomas Williams. Plus, the location of Cornwall is not far off from where the family originated.

On the negative side, the name is off (Hester Ann vs Hester Sophia) and the father's occupation is given as a miner (as far as I can make it out). I decided to dig a bit further, and managed to find a baptism record for the Hester Ann Williams who appears in the marriage record:

Unfortunately, this would appear to be a different person than the one I'm looking for. The mother's name is different, and of course, I've already found the baptism record for Hester Sophia Williams.

So, the search continues. I do think that it is unlikely that she would have stayed in England by herself at age ten, but I want to look for all possibilities.

William Bastoph Civil War Stories

I was doing some research on William Bastoph, who was the second husband of Edith Williams.

From some of my initial research, it appeared that William had quite a history to him, having been a civil war veteran. But his background story became potentially more interesting when I found an unsourced story about him in Ancestry that someone had posted.

In the story it mentions that William Bastoph was wounded in battle at one point and left on the battlefield for dead. A friend of his went out after the battle, found Bastoph and rescued him. The article went on to say that after the war he went on to become a civil engineer and built bridges throughout the American West. It also mentioned that he evidently had enlisted in the war because of a fallout with a girlfriend.

So, I decided to look into some of these stories to see if any of them could be backed up with sources. I checked with Newspapers.com and Newspaperarchive.com and found a number of articles that confirmed his civil engineering history

To investigate the Civil War side of things, I found through his service record that he served in the 103rd Regiment

I then managed to find a Battallion history for the 103th Regiment

and sure enough there is a personal account of the Battle of Seven Pines that mentions William Bastoph:

"When we got back to the open space where we had rallied our force we saw a line of soldiers in the woods to the left of that position. They stood, in grim silence, and in good order, and as we had not expected to see an enemy there we thought they were our own men ; but noticing straw hats and gray uniforms among them, we were perplexed with doubts. I stood on a stump to have a better view, and halloed out to them, 'show your colors.'

It was not a discreet thing to do, and I realized that when their guns came to an aim. I dropped quickly behind the stump, and their bullets splashed sand and water in my face. Our doubts were dispelled it was now every man for himself with us. I crawled into a thicket towards the rear, and when I came out at the other side I saw Corp. Bostaph of my company staggering from a wound under his arm. Sergt. Rimer and I took hold of him and helped him along. A man of Co. D, told me that Gillespie had fallen. As we came in view of Couch's line men called to us to hurry back.

Within the lines I met again the colonel of the 96th New York, and he advised our party to seek our Regiments. By this time we had had enough fighting for one day, and so we took his advice and continued our course to the rear. We placed Bostaph in an ambulance. It was five o'clock when we found our regiment, a mile to the rear."

And so I've found some more documentation to back up the story. Plus a whole lot more to research about that battle and his war service. As for the fallout with a girlfriend story, that may take some more research to verify

Profile: Amy Seymore Williams (1856-1929)

Isaac Amos Williams and Caroline Seymore Sanders’ fourth daughter was named Amy Seymore Williams and was born in 1856 in what was then known as Canada West [D03763, D03788, D03789, D05012, D05018, D05019, D05020]. She grew up in Guelph and later moved with her family to Mount Forest and Lindsay [D03763, D03788, D03789].

Amy emigrated to the United States in 1898 [D05019], a few years after both her mother and father had passed. She first settled in Ogden, Utah to live with her younger sister Edith Mary Williams Bostaph and her husband William Bostaph [D07013].

Amy lived in Ogden a few years before relocating to Globe, Gilla, Arizona around 1900. Benjamin and Sarah Eastman, in-laws of Amy’s younger brother Edwin L. Williams had relocated there when their son, the Reverend Frederick Soloman Eastman was appointed to the St John’s Episcopal Church in Globe [D07134, D07136].

Amy married William Gaskill in Globe 19 February 1901 [D05105, D07130]. Frederick Eastman performed the marriage and his parents Benjamin and Sarah served as witnesses to the marriage [D05105, D07130].

William Gaskill was born 17 November 1855 in Manchester, England [D05021, D05023, D05614, D05615]. He emigrated to Canada in 1879 at the age of twenty-four settling in Fort William, Ontario (now part of Thunder Bay) [D05614, D05615]. He found work with the Canadian Pacific Railroad as an accountant and worked there for eighteen years before moving to Globe, Arizona in December of 1899 [D05614, D05615].

In Globe, William became a partner in the successful butchering firm of Ryan & Gaskill [D05614, D05615] where he worked until he retired in late 1908 due to his health which was getting progressively worse [D05621]. William Gaskill died 13 February 1909 of locomotor ataxia at the age of fifty-three [D05021, D05023, D05614, D05615].

After her husband’s death, Amy Williams Gaskil briefly moved back to Ogden to live with her sister Edith and brother-in-law William once again [D05619]. From there she relocated to Salmon, Idaho to live with her brother Fred A Williams on his farm where she found work as a music teacher [D05018, D05619]. Fred had lost his wife only a few years before.

Amy married William Russell Hoyt, 19 May 1912 in Portland, Oregon [D05014]. William was a photographer who had lost his first wife only the previous year [D07104].

The two remained in Oregon, moving between Portland, Salem and eventually Eugene [D07083, D07085]. WIlliam Hoyt died in Eugene, Oregon, 11 August 1924 at the age of seventy-six [D07078, D07079, D07112, D07113]. After her second husband’s death, Amy moved back to Portland and continued her work as a music teacher. She passed away herself 6 January 1929 [D05012, D05013, D05020].

X00305 Update

I have posted previously about X00305 and how I found listings for a Douglas and Williams brewery in Amherstberg, Essex, Ontario and was wondering if it was the same John Douglas and Thomas Williams who were operating a brewery in Guelph around the same time.

I have since contacted the Essex Branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society to see if they had any more history about a brewery operation in Amherstburg operating aroun 1851. They weren't able to find anything in their collections or in the Marsh Collection about a Douglas and Williams Brewery in Amherstburg.

Recently, however, I was looking at the death registration for Mary Sophia Douglas, John Douglas' first daughter [D01451]. It states that she was born in 1851 in Amherstburg:

If this is the case, it definitely puts John Douglas living in the area at the time. Unfortunately the 1851 census for Amherstburg didn't survive, so it can't be verified that way. And to make things difficult, different documents give different birth years and locations for Mary Sophia Douglas, including Detroit and Guelph. So more further analysis is needed before I can definitely conclude anything.

X00316 Solved!!

Previously, I mentioned X00316 where there were two potential burial locations given for William R. Hoyt. One of them in Eugene Pioneer Cemetery and one in Multnomah Park Cemetery

I have since discovered that William's death registration mentions a burial in the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery:

I contacted someone with the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery Association and there is no stone associated with WIlliam R. Hoyt, so speculation that he is buried there may be based on the death registration alone.

I checked with the Multnomah Park Cemetery burials and they list a burial date for William Hoyt of 14 August 1924, three days after his death. So the more likely situation is that he was buried at Mulnomah Park, rather than first buried at Eugene Pioneer and then relocated later.

X00282: Amy S. Williams pre-1900

In last week's post (X00297) I mentioned that I wasn't able to verify much about William Gaskill's origins prior to 1900. There is a similar gap in the timeline for his wife, Amy S. Williams prior to 1900 as well.

Amy appears in the 1881 census living in Lindsay, Victoria, Ontario [D03789]. I have not been able to find her in the 1891 census, and the next record that I find after 1881 is her marriage record from 1901 where she is living in Globe, Gilla, Arizona [D05015]. I have not been able to find her in the 1900 US Census.

The 1920 Census indicates that Amy arrived in the U.S. in 1898 [D05019]. As well, a newspaper article found suggests that she lived in Ogden, Utah for a bit before moving to Arizona [D07130].

The move to Odgen makes sense, as her sister, Edith Mary Williams, would have been living there at the time. The reason for the move to Arizona is unclear, however. It may be related to the Eastman family (see X00315). It's a possibility that solving one of those mysteries may lead to solving the other.

X00060 Update

Just an update on X00060: Finding Sybil Williams Death Information. The only sources that I have found to support a death date of 13 May 1874 were her tombsone [D01637] and the Greenwood Cemetery Internment listing [D01131].

Since then I've had a look at the Ontario Death Registrations again and was not able to find anything. I've checked the Owen Sound newspapaers and the Grey County Surname Collection with no luck.

It may well be that the tombstone and internment listing are the only sources that exist. The only other thing that I can think of to search are the church burial records for the time.

X00316 William R. Hoyt Burial Location

Amy Seymore Williams (1856-1929) was the fourth daughter of Isaac Amos Williams and Caroline Seymore Sanders. Her second husband was William Russell Hoyt and from his death registration, he was born 23 March 1848 in Vermont, USA and died 11 August 1924 in Eugene Oregon.

On Find a Grave, there are two potential listings that could be his.

1. William Russell Hoyt, Eugene Pioneer Cemetery, memorial no 60218108
According to the notes on Find a Grave, he died 11 August 1924, aged 76 years 4 months 20 days which matches the information on the death registration that I have. As well, the notes have him listed as the son of William Hoyt & [---] Russell, which also matches the information on the death registration.

It also lists him as a father of Mrs. E. T. Deveraux, which I have yet to verify.

2. William R. Hoyt, Multnomah Park Cemetery, memorial no 46938793
This marker lists a birth year of 1848 and a death year of 1924, which match the information on the death registration.

This William R. Hoyt is buried with a Mary L. Hoyt (1848-1911) and lists a Laurel Milo Hoyt (1872-1956) as a child. I haven't yet verified the two names to see if they are connected


The first one, if the parent names are correct, is definitely the correct one. But the second one also does match. Amy S. Williams married William R. Hoyt in 1912, so his first wife passing 1911 would certainly fit.

Questions:

• Is the information on the first site correct? And what is the source?
• Could these sites be for the same person? Is there a possibility that William Hoyt was never buried in Eugene Pioneer Cemetery, as there is no marker there?

Still to investigate:

• Research Mary L. Hoyt (1848-1911) to see if she was married to the same William R. Hoyt that was later married to Amy S. Williams
• Research Laurel Milo Hoyt (1872-1956) to see if there is a connection
• Research E.T. Devereaux to see if there is a connection

X00315: Amy S. Williams' Marriage Witnesses

I've found the marriage record for Amy S. Williams and William Gaskill, from 19 February 1901. It was a little surprising to find because the marriage took place in Globe, Gila, Arizona. To this point, i have not been able to find out why Amy Williams was in Arizona, or the US, for that matter.

One thing of interest in the marriage record is that the minister performing the ceremony was an F.S. Eastman, and the witnesses were a B. Eastman and an S.C. Eastman. Amy S. Williams had a sister-in-law, Maude Alfreda Eastman. Maude's parents were Benjamin Eastman and Sarah Alfreda. Could they have been the B. and S.C. Eastman? And they had a son named Fred S. Eastman. Could he have been the F.S. Eastman who performed the ceremony? And also, what were they doing in Arizona?

Perhaps, if the witnesses and minister are the in-laws, this might lead to an explanation as to why Amy Williams was in Arizona at the time.

Next steps: Research the timelines for the Eastman family to see if they could have been in Arizona at the time.

Profile: George Williams [1860-1886] and Elizabeth Ann Stephenson [1868-1946]

George Williams [1860-1886] and Elizabeth Ann Stephenson [1868-1946]

George Williams was another son of Isaac Amos Williams and Caroline Seymour Sanders. He was born about 1860 in Guelph, Canada West [D03763, D03788, D05090, D05091, D05095, D05121]. He followed his father’s footsteps and entered the accounting profession [D05095]. He was working as an accountant in Toronto when he married Elizabeth Ann Stephenson on 7 Jan 1885 [D05090].

Elizabeth Ann Stephenson was born 18 March 1868 in Cookstown, Simcoe County daughter of William Stephenson and Ann Willoughby [D05090, D05093, D05098, D05099, D05100, D05101, D05102, D05121].

George Williams only lived for about a year and half after his marriage to Elizabeth, passing away of tuberculosis on 13 June 1886 [D05095] at the age of approximately twenty-six. George and Elizabeth had one child together, George Bertrand Williams who was born on 13 November 1885 in Parkdale [D05094].

After the death of her husband, Elizabeth Ann Stephenson Williams married William Ritter on 26 September 1888 in Toronto [D05093]. She lived to the age of seventy-eight and died on 20 Jun 1946 [D05102, D05121]. She is buried along with her first husband, George Williams in St James Cemetery, Toronto [D05121].

X00281: What Happened to Edwin & Maude Williams after 1921?

Last week I posted the profiles of Edwin Lawerence Williams [1869-?] and Maude Alfreda Williams [1869-?] based on what I have found so far. Unfortunately, I have no information on what happened to them past the 1921 census. As of 1921 they were both living in Toronto at 58 Elmer Avenue.

I have not been able to find them in the death registrations for Ontario, or any cemetery records for them using a number of sources including Find A Grave and the Toronto Trust Cemeteries Database.

Some sources still to try:

• Local newspapers
• Directories
• Voters lists
• The 1940 National Registration

Profile: Edwin Lawrence Williams [1869-?] and Maude Alfreda Eastman [1869-?]

Edwin Lawrence Williams [1869-?] and Maude Alfreda Eastman [1869-?]

Edwin Lawrence Williams was born in Mount Forest, Wellington, Ontario in June 1869 [D03788, D03789, D05223, D05224, D05225, D05226]. He was the youngest child of Isaac Williams and Caroline Seymour Sanders.

Edwin moved around with the family from Mount Forest to Port Perry and then eventually to Lindsay, Victoria County [D03789]. At the age of twelve, Edwin assisted his father’s bookkeeping work [D03789] but later learned the trade of a jeweller. He first worked in Brighton, Northumberland [D05223, D05224] but later found work in a watch factory in Toronto [D05225, D05226].

Edwin married Maude Alfreda Eastman on 7 Jan 1891 in Toronto [D05223]. Maude was the daughter of Benjamin Eastman and Sarah Alfreda. She was born in February of 1869 in Minden, Haliburton County [D05223, D05224, D06663, D06664] and grew up there [D06663, D06664].

Edwin and Maude continued to live in Toronto after they were married, residing at 58 Elmer Ave [D05226].

X00307: White Bear Hotel

In the 1841 census as well as some of his children's birth and baptism records show Thomas Williams as being the publican of the White Bear Hotel on Dale Street in Liverpool.

I was doing some research on the history of the hotel and found out that Herman Melville stayed at the hotel on 8 November 1856, according to his diaries.

I was trying to determine the time period in which he would have owned the hotel. I first found this article [D06804] from the Liverpool Mercury, 22 September 1837 and mentions that Thomas Williams just took over the operations:



Then I found this article [D06806], also from the Liverpool Mercury, dated 3 May 1871 that mentions that the hotel has remained under the same ownership for 30 years.



So that gives us a range of 1837 to 1841 in which Thomas Williams ran the hotel.

Next, I'd like to find out more about the history of the Inn - when it was founded and when it went out of business. It no longer exists.

Update on X00303: Who is Martha Williams

An update on X00303:

According to this article posted on the Grey Roots website, John Frost's wife Mary Williams was of Welsh descent whereas the Thomas Williams family originated from around Bristol in England, so that doesn't appear to be the connection.

Also, when I was at Greenwood Cemetery in the summery, I wasn't able to find the stone.
