X00300: Who is Ann Sipin - Solved!

So, a few years ago, I posted about X00300, the question of who is Ann Sipin who shows up in the 1861 census living with Thomas Williams and family. She appears to be a member of the family somehow, but the surname was not one that I have found anywhere else.

I was looking at the 1861 census record again and started wondering if the surname could perhaps have been Tipping, rather than Sipin. It would make sense as one of Thomas William's daughters married into the Tipping family.

I checked, and Elizabeth Ann Tipping, who would have been born in 1853 did not appear with the rest of the Tipping family in the 1861 census. So it would make sense that the "Ann Sipin' in the 1861 census with the WIlliams family is in fact Elizabeth Ann Tipping.

X00060 Update

Just an update on X00060: Finding Sybil Williams Death Information. The only sources that I have found to support a death date of 13 May 1874 were her tombsone [D01637] and the Greenwood Cemetery Internment listing [D01131].

Since then I've had a look at the Ontario Death Registrations again and was not able to find anything. I've checked the Owen Sound newspapaers and the Grey County Surname Collection with no luck.

It may well be that the tombstone and internment listing are the only sources that exist. The only other thing that I can think of to search are the church burial records for the time.

X00300: Who is Ann Sipin?

In the 1861 Census of Canada, the Williams family is found living in Guelph. Thomas Williams and his wife Sybil are listed and in the household are their two youngest daughters, Emily and Samina. But there are two others living in the household at the time: Ann Sipin, aged 8 and Maria Hill aged 18.

Maria Hill is clearly not a family member, as she is listed as being a servant and was born in Ireland. But what about Ann Sipin? Is is possible that she might just have been living with the family with no connection, but could she possibly be a clue to a connection?

At the age of 8 in 1861, she would have been born about 1853. She would likely be too young to be another child of Thomas and Sybil Williams. But could she perhaps be a granddaughter? One remote possibility is that she is the daughter of Hester Sophia Williams, who I have not been able to find any trace of after 1841 (see X00291). Perhaps Hester Sophia married a man with the surname of Sipin, and had a child but then the two of them died shortly thereafter, leaving their daughter to be raised by her grandparents.

It's a possibility, but I have not seen the name Ann Sipin show up anywhere else in the records to confirm one way or another.

X00060 Sybil Williams Death Information

So, here's the issue. I'm trying to find a death record or death information for a Sybil Williams (born Sybil Foxwell) (Feb 17 1798 - May 13, 1874)



Here is the known information:

• She was born February 17 1798 in Gloucester, England based on her baptism records [Sources: D00157, D00419]
• She died May 13 1874 based on her tombstone and the Greenwood Cemetery Internment listing [Sources: D01131, D01637]
• She was buried May 15 1874 Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound, Ontario based on the Greenwood Cemetery Internment listing [Source: D01131]
• Her religion was Church of England [Source: D01565]
• She was living in Owen Sound in 1871 based on the 1871 census [Source: D01565] and Guelph before that.

Here's the results of my research:

• Couldn't find anything in the Ontario Civil Death Registrations on either Ancestry or FamilySearch
• Couldn't find anything in the Ontario Civil Death Registrations on microfilm
• Couldn't find anything in the indexes of Owen Sound newspapers
• Couldn't find anything in the indexes of Guelph newspapers
• I found a death certification for a Sybil Williams in England in 1874, but it is not her [D03877]

Any other suggestions of places to look? Or next steps to try?
