Analysis: Harold Edwin Burnet Birth

Details/Background:
I have not been able to find a birth registration for Harold Edwin Burnet. There are a number of different documents that do give a date/year of birth:

Analysis:
The range of dates is between 1889 and 1893. Harold’s older brother was born in 1889 so it was unlikely that he was also born in 1889. Because he appears in the 1891 census, it is also unlikely that he was born after April of 1891.

The only specific dates given were 22 March 1890 and 22 March 1891. So, it’s safe to say that March 22nd is the date, and it would either be 1890 or 1891.

Of the documents that give a full date, the Social Security and WW2 Draft Registration were the ones where he would have given the dates himself, so 22 March 1890 is the most likely date of birth.

Conclusion:
22 March 1890 is the most likely date of birth for Harold Edwin Burnet.

Analysis: Emerson Claude Smith's Date of Birth

Emerson Claude Smith's profile can be found here. The details below describe the analysis for how I determined his date of birth from conflicting information.

Details/Background:
There are conflicting dates of birth given for Emerson Claude Smith’s date of birth.

Most sources concur with a date of 13th October 1881, although one source suggests 14th October 1881, one 23rd November 1881 and still another 1883.

The two big outliers are the 1891 census [D04734] which puts his birthdate at about 1883 and the 1917 Flesherton Advance article [D04805] which gives his birthdate as 23 November 1881. All other sources are consistent with a birthdate of October 1881.

The newspaper article was written in 1917 and newspapers are notorious for reporting incorrect details, so I’m going to rule that out as incorrect. Census records are also notorious for errors and so I’m going to rule that one out as incorrectly reported information.

So, the remaining sources all point to 1881 as the year of birth, and most of them October as the month. All the sources that give dates suggest 13 October 1881, except for the birth registration [D04797], which suggests 14 October 1881 as the date. The service record information [D04799] is derived from the same source as the attestation papers [D04798] and therefore would not be an independent source.

This would suggest that either the birth registration has the correct date of birth, but Emerson grew up thinking that his date of birth was the 13th or that the birth registration information was recorded incorrectly.

Normally, the birth registration information would be the one that I would rely on more because it was given the closest to the actual event, but in this case it seems like there is more information to support a date of birth of 13th October 1881.

Conclusion:
The most likely date of birth for Emerson Claude Smith is 13th October 1881.

Analysis: Death Date for Annie Frances Hewett

I had a green leaf show up on Ancestry for Annie Frances Hewett. She sort of disappears off the map after 1911, but an ancestry hint popped up with an Alberta death record. The death record shows an Annie F. Hewer dying in 1917 in Eastberg, Alberta.

So, I ordered the full record from the Provincial Archives of Alberta. While the information is close, there are a significant number of questionable items on the record:

The surname does appear to be Hewer on the death record rather than Hewett
Her middle name is listed as Florence rather than Frances. Her middle name is listed as Frances on her birth record [D04712].
The contact name is listed as Harry K. Hewer. I have not come across anyone with a similar name to this point
Her age is listed as 41 years, 11 months and 28 days. With a death date of 13 April 1917, this would work out to a date of birth of 16 February 1875, as opposed to the date of birth of 10 March 1872 on her birth registration [D04712]
There's no sign that any of the rest of the family were in Alberta so the fact that she was found in a death record in Alberta is somewhat suspicious

With all of the above information, there are too many differences to conclude that this is the same Annie F. Hewett. So what happened to her beyond 1911 still remains a mystery.

The only calendar date of birth given in 24th of June from both the 1901 and 1911 census records [D00307, D00334], so that is most likely the date of birth.

The census records seem to either give dates of birth of 1858 or 1859, but since the census dates are often in the months of May or June, that could be dependant on when the census was conducted. The dates given by people who would better know such as Marriage records or records after death all seem to suggest a birth year of 1858.

Conclusion:

The most likely date of birth for T.W. Douglas is 24 June 1858.

Only three of the sources [D00307, D00334 and D005634] give a calendar date and all three give the date of November 11th. So, it is safe to assume that November 11th is the calendar date and that she was born either November 11, 1864 or November 11, 1865.

So, if we assume that her birthday was in November and most of the censuses were taken in the middle of the year, most of the records support a birth year of 1864; the only exceptions being the 1901 census and the gravestone which suggest a birth year of 1865.

The 1901 census record is difficult to read, however, and there were a lot of cases where the 1901 census was off by a hear. And the gravestone was carved after her death. So, I would conclude that those two records are outliers.

Conclusion:

The most likely conclusion is a date of birth of 11 November 1864.

Most of the records imply a year of birth of 1865. There are a couple of census records (1881 and 1921) that are outliers. The death registration and burial records both suggest a birth year of 1867, but those likely could have used the same source for their information.

Also, since his next oldest sibling was born in 1860, a birth year of 1865 would be more likely than 1867.

Conclusion:

Based on the evidence found, the most likely date of birth for Clarence Williams Douglas is 9 February 1865.

The gravestone inscription is difficult to read: it could be 1863 or 1868. A date of birth of 20 October 1863 would be consistent with the death notice and burial records, which would have been from about the same time. Her next oldest sibling was born about 1857, so a birth date of 1868 would be very unlikely.

Five of the records [D01236, D01952, D01131, D04954, D00838] are consistent with a birth date of 20 October 1863.

The remaining two are census records [D01334, D00760] and are only off by a year. The oldest census record is consistent with a date of birth of 20 October 1863.

Conclusion:

The most likely date of birth for Mary Louisa Leach Douglas is 20 October 1863.
