X00071 Andrew Hook EOL

Andrew Hook is my 5th Great-Grandfather and currently and End-Of-Line Ancestor. To this point I haven't found out much about him, other than he married Elizabeth Logan in Belford, Northumberland, England on 23 July 1786 and was a shepherd (according to his wife's death record). Elizbeth Logan Hook is listed as a widow in 1847, so he likely died before then.

Recently, I've found an index of a record for a burial on 24 October 1820 in Belford for an Andrew Hook. The age at death was 58 years, which would correspond to a birth year of about 1762, which would work with a marriage in 1786. so, it's a possibility. It's not definite, but the name, dates and locations match.

I don't have the original record yet, but I'll see if I can get a copy through the Family History Library and see if it gives any more information on it.

X00196 Ann Halfhyde Green Baptism - Solved!

After searching in a number of places, I did ultimately manage to solve X00196 and track down a baptism record for Ann Halfhyde Green.

I first looked for marriages before 1771 between an Edward Chapman and an Ann. There were a number of different variations, but a few people on Ancestry had pointed to Edward Chapman and Ann Macro as being the ones, so I had a look at that marriage:

The marriage took place in Barrow, Suffolk, where Ann Macro was from, but it notes that Edward Chapman was from St. Edward Parish in Cambridge. So I looked in both places for baptisms and found this one for an Ann Halfhyde Chapman:

So, mystery solved. I have now identified her parents and have found her baptism record. The next mystery, of course is where the names "Green" and "Halfhyde" come from, but that's a mystery for another day.

X00086 Surname Wright in Greenwood Cemetery - Solved!

Some time ago, I was photographing gravestones at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. I stopped in at the Mausoleum to photograph some memorials on my list and I found a few with the surname Wright. Since Wright is a surname that I'm looking for in Owen Sound I took photos of them:

The names are:
  • Margaret D. Wright, wife of Herbert J. Thompson
  • William H. Wright
  • Isabel McPhee

I've done some research and have since found out that Margaret D. Wright is the daughter of William M. Wright and Annie Maude Dougal, who are in my tree.

On the other hand, William H. Wright and Isabel McPhee do not appear to be connected to my family - at least not as far as I can tell at this point. William H. Wright was the son of Henry Wright and Elizabeth Gray. And while both Wright and Gray have connections to that branch of the family, I don't have any connections by that name.

So, that's another one solved!

Ann Wood Hardy Baptism

A lot of people get Ann Wood Hardy's birth information incorrect. I've seen it many times.

Ann Wood is the wife of Lancelot Hardy. It's easy to verify that via Lancelot and Anne's marriage record from 11 November 1824 in Sherburn-in-Elmet, Yorkshire, England [D00023].

Then, you can find the family in the 1841 census for England living in Farndale, Yorkshire, England [D01519].

But therein lies the problem that a lot people make. They look at Anne's age in the 1841 census (which is given as 40 in the census) and then assume that was she was born in 1801. And then it's not difficult to find a baptism record for an Ann Wood in 1801 in that general area. But it's completely wrong. Why? Because the 1841 UK census rounded individual's ages to the nearest multiple of five. Which means that an age of 40 years old is only an estimate.

If you assume then that the birth year is only an estimate and then widen your search you'll come across a baptism record for an Ann Wood, born 18 December 1804, daughter of Joseph and Jane Wood [D01077].

And how do Iknow that that is the correct one? Because a number of the baptism records for Lancelot and Ann's children will list the grandparents as well, and they often list the mother as "Ann Wood, daughter of Joseph and Jane". Which is why it's always important to check the original record to see if there is more information on it.
